Anna obtained a double degree in Commerce & Law from the University of New South Wales in December 2005, majoring in Finance.
How did you join Macquarie Bank? I got a part-time job at Macquarie at the beginning of my final year of study and was there when the Bank opened its applications for the 2006 graduate intake. At the time I was working in Macquarie’s Business Banking division, however, in my graduate application I indicated that I would like to move to the Real Estate division, as I felt I could better utilize both my degrees there. Macquarie encourages people to be active in pursuing a career path and so was amenable to such a move.
What happened then? I moved to the Real Estate division to continue part time work before beginning full time work in February 2006 when the graduate program commenced. During my first year as a full-time staff member I have also completed my College of Law studies and been admitted as a lawyer in NSW.
What was the graduate intake process? Graduates complete an online application form, attaching their CV, and successful applicants are called for interviews: the first was with HR, where you explain what division you are interested in working in and subsequent interviews are with representatives from the division you are being considered for. There are also separate sessions for psychometric assessment.
What happens once you have been accepted? There is an initial three-day induction program where we learn about the different divisions of the Bank, and we learnt a lot about Macquarie’s culture. We were also able and encouraged to network with the other graduates at induction and throughout our first year. Macquarie promotes on the job training with courses available to further develop skills, and everyone in a division is available and willing to help you at any point.
Anna's tips:
- Be open-minded about what you want to do: studying an area is different from working in it. What you think you want to do might not turn out to be what you actually want to do.
- Don’t be afraid to apply. Yes, these are huge, global corporations, but it is possible to join them. Don’t doubt what you are capable of.
- Be yourself at the interviews. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking they want a certain type of person. They want to see you for who you are, so be yourself throughout the process.
